Go Green and Save

College students have a unique connection to Earth Day. The first Earth Day was celebrated over 50 years ago because college students protested. The first Earth Day was created to help people throughout the United States learn more about environmental issues. April 22 was picked as the recurring date for Earth Day because it aligned well with college students’ schedules, taking place between spring break and finals. Since then, college students have continued to play an integral role in protecting the environment.

As we prepare for Earth Day 2024, pick one or more of the tips below to give back to the planet:

1. Reduce the amount of single-use plastic you use.

You can do this by using reusable bags for groceries, refillable water bottles instead of individual plastic water bottles, using your own utensils for takeout food instead of disposable plastic silverware, and using metal straws instead of plastic straws when possible.

2. Go green.

Review any accounts you receive paper statements for and switch to electronic, if possible. This helps to reduce paper waste.

3. Try a plant-based diet.

If you currently eat meat, consider choosing more plant-based options. Eating less meat can help with the effects of climate change. Even if it’s only one day a week – such as integrating “meatless Monday” into your routine – try it out to see if it’s a sustainable option for you long-term.

4. Donate items you no longer use.

Instead of throwing away things you no longer use or want, donate them. This allows someone else to get use out of your unwanted items and reduces waste. Even items like electronics and appliances can be donated or recycled.

5. Volunteer to participate in a community clean-up event.

Research local volunteer opportunities in your area. Your college or university may have specific organizations they partner with for volunteer opportunities on Earth Day. Bring a friend or do something good all by yourself.

Continue to protect the planet by adopting new habits that are better for the environment. Try one or more of the five tips above on Earth Day and beyond. Get your friends and family members to join you so you can hold each other accountable. This year marks 54 years since the first Earth Day. Do your part to support environmental efforts by going green and giving back!
